Before a performance, the Levels of the microphones must be checked. This gives the sound technician an indication of the level of the sound. The technician may also check the Balance which is the loudness between various microphones and speakers or the balance between treble, bass and middle sounds - the "EQ" of the mix. All microphones are connected to an individual Channel which is on an Audio Mixer, which is a device for mixing a number of signals, (i.e. voice, instruments, playback music and sound effects).

The best place for the sound desk is usually in front of the actors, perhaps in the audience or up the back of the space. This is because the technician has to mix all the sounds together to give an even sounding amplification, and they can best hear exactly what the performance may sound like, if they are in front of the sound, not behind or to the side of it.
